Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership TTIP
Currently, the Directorate The Americas Canada, USA, Mexico deals with, among other topics, the political, economic and regulatory issues surrounding the Transatlantic Free Trade Agreement TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership; formerly Trans-Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, TAFTA). The conditions for the TTIP-contract were negotiated under international law in July 2013.
The Multilateral Agreement on Investment is considered the precursor, however, in the 1990s it faced considerable difficulties and finally failed due to opposition by France. As a current test case for TTIP, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) applies. The Canadian-European agreement already negotiated in 2014, which in Europe went largely unnoticed by the public, is as well as TTIP/TAFTA the subject of numerous discussions. Both agreements will also be associated with the international Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) , that failed in 2012 due to civil protests from EU countries and the USA
