International Understanding as an Economic Mandate

The Diplomatic Council (DC) was established as a Global Think Tank with the objective to serve as a bridge between diplomacy, economy and society. Diplomatic Council members share the idea that economic diplomacy provides a solid foundation for international understanding and a more peaceful interaction amongst nations.

A thriving economy bringing prosperity to mankind is one of the best guarantors of peace. Based on this perception, the Diplomatic Council has translated its goal of promoting international understanding into an economic mandate. The global DC business network is linked to the diplomatic corps of the different nations.Pope at UN GA 2015

The experts and leaders engaged in the Diplomatic Council play a key role in consulting the ambassadors on how the economic principles can be transferred into the global diplomatic network. Vice versa the ambassadors use their diplomatic competency to ensure that the economic activities ultimately promote understanding amongst nations and safeguard peace. Against this background, the Diplomatic Council welcomes personalities from diplomacy, economy and society who enjoy high degrees of acceptance, high levels of expertise and who pursue the same visions and values.

High-level contacts worldwide

An ambassador or consul general is assigned to a country for a duration of approximately three to four years. Valuable relations established during this period are usually lost after the diplomat is sent to his next destination. In order to prevent this, the Diplomatic Council was founded with the purpose to maintain and expand this unique contact network even after the diplomat has moved to another country. DC diplomats always bring together their best contacts. Hence, a worldwide contact network is created which expands with every move of a DC diplomat. Diplomatic Council dignitaries from business and society and responsible enterprises also invite their top-class network to join.

Each new member striving for admission to the DC community is reviewed and authorized by the Ambassadors’ Circle, which is made up of DC Presidents and other Ambassadors. In addition to the DC Presidents, diplomats from numerous other nations are part of the Diplomatic Council.

Built on three pillars

The Diplomatic Council is founded on three pillars as defined hereinafter:

  1. The Diplomatic Council is a global think tank and enjoys the special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and adheres to the charter of the United Nations. In compliance with the UN principles, the Diplomatic Council is committed to serve the common welfare, to support charitable projects and to participate in scientific studies and projects.
  1. The Diplomatic Council is a global business network providing a platform for diplomats, business leaders and societal personalities to meet and enrich each other.
  1. The Diplomatic Council supports its members in fulfilling their noble tasks to drive economic diplomacy.

Quality enjoys high priority

Quality has top priority in every respect. Diplomatic Council corporate members (silver and gold) are entitled to carry the ”DC Trusted Company“ seal in order to demonstrate their trustworthiness to their employees, clients, suppliers and other business partners. Each application for a corporate membership is carefully reviewed which is a prerequisite for the granting of the seal. The evaluation of trustworthiness is executed by the Diplomatic Council as an organization in consultative status with the United Nations.

For this reason, the seal also carries the addition: “UN Consultative Status“ because, as a matter of fact, each member can participate in the UN-related work of the Diplomatic Council. After approval of the corporate membership, the seal is made available to the new corporate member for marketing purposes (official letterheads, brochures, website, email signature, etc.) as long as the company is a member.

DC Certification in selected DC Forums

Selected DC forums have created quality certificates. The “DC Preferred Partner Hospital/Clinic” seal is granted to hospitals/clinics following an extensive quality check by the assessors of Temos International, a global hospital certifier. Up to now over 50 hospitals located all over the world have been awarded the DC Preferred Partner Hospital/Clinc certificate. Further certificates are issued by the DC Global IT Forum and the Initiative DC Safer Internet for Children.

Initiatives for a better world

Protecting children against violence and abuse

The Diplomatic Council is driven by the strong desire to assist social and humanitarian initiatives in order to help the less privileged ones.

In a joint effort with White IT, an alliance established by the State of Lower Saxony, the Diplomatic Council has started its Initiative Safer Internet for Children to fight against child pornography. The alliance is supported by governmental authorities, the police, large IT groups, child aid agencies and many more.

Under the patronage of the Diplomatic Council, the DC Software Alliance has introduced its first prototype of the „Child Abuse Prevention System“ (CAPS), which helps preventing the dissemination of child pornography. The software is capable of analyzing different data such as picture and video data or documents of more than 120 formats. It can also extract background information in order to identify connections and indications from the crime scene, the offender and the victim. Consequently, the software can support the prosecution of this severe type of crime.

Applying for a DC membership

UN requests that DC membership is open to all persons

In accordance with the United Nations, the DC is not allowed to select members “by invitation only”. Each person, each company and each organization worldwide shall be granted the opportunity to apply for a Diplomatic Council membership which can be made online through the DC web portal.

Each application is carefully reviewed

However,  the Diplomatic Council reserves the right to review each single application and either confirm or decline membership. For this purpose, each application is reviewed by the Ambassadors’ Circle in order to ensure the high level of the network.

Membership categories silver und gold

There are two individual membership categories

  • Silver (corporate membership which can also be applied for by an individual who would like to be involved in the work of the DC).
  • Gold (DC Business Ambassador enjoy the same rank as accredited ambassadors), heads of governments, prime ministers, state ministers and ambassadors enjoy an honorary membership, however they have to apply for membership as well. The honorary membership is combined with the expectation that the honorary member is willing to actively engage in the DC for the benefit of all members.

The soul of the Diplomatic Council: its dedicated members

The Diplomatic Council is driven by active members from diplomacy, economy and society who are honoured and committed to help encouraging intercultural relations, enhancing international understanding and promoting a more peaceful relations amongst nations. In a world that demands a smooth interplay of economic competency and diplomatic skills, a think tank uniting diplomacy and business is crucial.

The Diplomatic Council is inspired by Buddha’s idea according to which the flame of one candle can lighten up thousands of other candles without becoming weaker. In the same way Buddha did, the Diplomatic Council does not lose its joy and fulfillment but rather increases with every activity taken.
